Bruno Benne
Choreographer and dancer
Specialized in Baroque dance and music, Bruno Benne renews these arts today with a modern touch by composing his own Baroque style. Surrounded by dancers and musicians within the Beaux-Champs Company, he reveals and fuses this heritage into something new.
After training in classical dance at the CRR of Toulouse, he continued his studies in contemporary dance at the CNSMD of Paris. His encounter with Baroque dance came in 2005, when he began long-term collaborations with two leading specialists of this style : Béatrice Massin and Marie-Geneviève Massé. Other experiences further sharpened his knowledge, including performing choreographies by the pioneer Francine Lancelot for Atys in 2011, as well as works by Françoise Denieau and Nathalie Van Parys.
As a performer, he has danced at the Royal Opera of Versailles, the Paris and Lyon National Operas, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Cervantino Festival in Mexico, the Barbican Centre in London, and the Montreal Baroque Festival, among others.
From his early choreographic work, he intersected his research with American minimalism, collaborating three times between 2013 and 2017 with Lucinda Childs. This permeability between Baroque codification and conceptual abstraction has led him to rethink his relationship to time and space.
With his company Beaux-Champs, he has created several works including SQUARE (2016), Caractères (2019), Rapides (2022), and Ornements (2016) — the latter commissioned for the Ballet of the Opéra national du Rhin.
A Beaumarchais Foundation laureate (2015), Bruno Benne has been an associate artist at La Barcarolle / Spectacle Vivant Audomarois since 2021.
